Strengths

What are your strengths?   Everyone develops abilities and skills throughout the lifetime.  Abilities and skills that are easy for some to develop may be more difficult for others to cultivate, as each individual is different and has a unique set of talents.  It is important that you evaluate which skills and abilities are your strengths.  A thorough and honest assessment of your strengths will help you choose a major and/or career in which you will find satisfaction and success.

As you evaluate your skills and abilities, consider the following:

Can you make distinctions between your interests and your abilities?   What you do well and what you enjoy doing may be two different things.

  • List the activities that you like to do, but may not do well.

  • List the activities that you do well, but may not like to do.

  • What are your personal and academic strengths?

  • What are your most developed skills?  List five you can do well.

  • Considering all of your responses, what activities can you identify that reflect both interests and strengths?  How do your interests and abilities relate to major and career options?

Speaking with your academic advisor and/or a career consultant can help you to understand how your strengths relate to major and career options.  The following web link might also be of assistance.
