A Fitting Choice

Once you have considered the various components of self (interests, strengths, values, personality, and goals) begin thinking about what majors/careers would be a good fit for you.  Remember to integrate your knowledge and understanding of who you are with information  about the opportunities that exist in the world around you.  Try the following exercise:

  1. First, get two different colors of highlighter.

  2. Go to Occupational Outlook Handbook

  3. Find an occupation you think you might be interested in and print out the description.

  4. Read the description, highlighting anything you like about the job in one color, and anything you don't like in the other color.

  5. When you're done, look it over.  What did you like?  Why?  What didn't you like?  Why?  Are your "don't likes" something you can live with, or would they really make you miserable??

Speaking with your academic advisor and/or a career consultant can help you to understand how to integrate what you have learned about your self so that you may evaluate major and career options.  The following web link might also be of assistance. O*NET Online
