Career

Learning the basics about different occupations is a really important step in the career decision-making process.  In addition to learning about and understanding yourself, it is very important to gather information about different careers and what they entail.  Here are just some of the ways to educate yourself about various career opportunities.

  1. Use Career Services' Career Resource Library (CRL).  This library houses over 700 resources for use in exploring majors and careers.  The CRL is open weekdays from 8AM to 5PM.

  2. Click here for an exercise to guide you in finding information about different careers.

  3. Talk to people about their jobs .  Got an aunt whose job sounds exciting?  Ask her about it!

  4. Participate in Job Shadowing .  This is an opportunity for you to go out into the workplace to spend the day with an individual who works in an occupation of interest to you.  Meet with a Career Consultant (call 486-3013 to set up an appointment) for more information.

  5. As always, talk with your academic advisor and/or a career consultant.  The following websites may also be helpful to you.
    UConn Career Services
    Occupational Outlook Handbook
    Careerzone
    O*NET Online
    America's Career InfoNet
    Career Adviser - www.10minuteresume.com

In conclusion, you'll notice that career is the answer to the equation.  As with any equation, if you change any part of the equation, the answer will also change.  As your self, education, and experience change over time, so will the occupations you will be interested in.  Career development is a dynamic process and you continue to grow and learn throughout your lifetime.  Enjoy your journey!
